Surgery Overview

BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) surgery in dogs aims to improve breathing by addressing anatomical abnormalities that cause airway obstruction. It typically involves widening the nostrils, shortening the soft palate, and sometimes removing everted laryngeal saccules. The specific procedures and their combination can vary based on the dog’s individual needs and the severity of their condition.

Meet Chicago, a lovable 2-year-old English Bulldog, came to us with a history of heavy breathing since puppyhood. Concerned for her comfort, her owner scheduled a BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) consult. During the exam, Dr. Lee found that she had an elongated soft palate and stenotic nares. Chicago underwent BOAS surgery, and we’re happy to report it went smoothly! Now she’s on the road to a more comfortable, breath-easy life.
